Resumo: Temporal and spatial variations of the benthic communities in three rocky shores of the coastal region of the Espírito Santo State were studied, and related to environmental factors. They were collected quarterly between August 2006 and May 2007, using intersection points. Chthamalus spp. and Brachidontes spp. were the most abundant taxa in the three areas, occupying the upper level of the rocky shores. In lower areas, there was an increased number of species. The invasive species Isognomon bicolor occurred, but in a low coverage. Data indicate that this species is well established. The dendogram and MDS ordination indicated the separation of samples from the exposed and sheltered areas. According to the Analysis of Similarity and Analysis of Variance results, communities were significantly different between those areas and seasons. The environmental factors that most influenced the communities were the way they were exposed and the inclination of the shore. Setibão (exposed shore) showed the highest average diversity and richness values. The temporal and spatial variation of the communities occurred in lower levels, where environmental conditions are less stressful.
